Face it. What we're all seeking is that one special soul on earth who will accept us as we are. One who loves our flaws as well as our assets. One who doesn't make it their mission to try to "change" us to make us how they think we should be.
Acceptance is the operative word here. Understanding the underlying traits of the person of interest will rather objectively point out their tendencies. From that point, it becomes a conscious decision to either accept or reject them.
Now there are some instances where even trying to tolerate the differences would seem ludicrous to most "sane" individuals. You all know of someone who you just can't for the life of you figure out why these people are together, let alone why they would ever choose to stay together. In these cases there is usually some very strong chemistry that magnetically hangs on to provide the stage for one or the other to resolve some type of past life karma. Almost like a pre-destined agreement to stay through the experiences to give one the opportunity to atone for previous wrong-doing and learn from the other how to correct their prior misuse of a particular energy.
But, for most of us, it would be quite helpful to know what we're getting into before making that final leap. Many other cultures practice this same "test". The Indians are known for their "arranged marriages" where the parents choose the mates for their children, using a form of vedic astrology to determine their compatibility.
In this country many churches who require pre-marital counseling, strive to point out the differences and "issues" that could become troublesome in an attempt to further define the essence or values of each through some form of testing. The same holds true for many employment opportunities.
